Importing Users from Other Sources

To import users, select Users from Other Source on the Import submenu. Figure 5.17 shows the default page layout.

When importing users, they can only be assigned to a single, existing group. Use the Group Management page from the User submenu to divide them to different groups at a later stage, if required.

There are five options for importing users:

Windows NT or Samba Server for users who are still using a Windows NT server, or using a Linux Samba authenticator.

Windows Active Directory (via ADS Search) and Windows Active Directory (via LDAP Search) provides two different methods for searching a Windows Active Directory server for users.

Netware NDS (eDirectory) for importing from a Netware NDS directory.

Generic LDAP Server Search for importing from a generic LDAP server.

Selecting the appropriate radio button will cause the screen to update with fields specific to the method of importing chosen.

Figure 5.18 shows the fields to be filled in for a NT/Samba import.

Of the two Windows Active Directory import methods, using the ADS method has far fewer fields to enter than the LDAP, and does not require the User Organisation Unit to be entered. The ADS search will also find all users, which is useful for large hierarchy.

However, for complex AD environments, it is better to import users from different containers into different CN Pro User Groups. Specific containers can be imported by using a full path from the Active Directory’s root (for example, curriculum/users/2007 will import just the users from the 2007 container).

The fields for the generic LDAP import can be found in LDAP Authentication.  Enter the same values here and click Retrieve User List.
