Troubleshooting the CSRV

Before the first successful download of the CSRV occurs, CN Pro will operate in Online Lookup Mode. To do this, CN Pro must be able to connect to csrv.censornet.com:2200, which runs in three international locations.

Note

The firewall must permit CN Pro to connect to any IP address on port 2200/tcp, to allow it to ascertain the closest server for online lookups.

Although all of our mirrors use the HTTPS protocol, meaning that any upstream proxies in the data path cannot determine the size of the download (the initial download is over 2GB in size), some ISPs just count the number of packets in a data stream and cut-off after a set amount of data has been downloaded. This may prevent enough data from being downloaded to CN Pro for it to have a full CSRV database, in which case, CN Pro will remain in Online Lookup Mode.

CN Pro ensures that the download will resume from where it left off if this situation occurs and no data corruption should occur.

CensorNet can also offer a service where baseline files can be supplied on DVD via next day delivery. This is why the dialogue in Figure 8.12 offers an Update Mode field.

The default option for this field is Download all updates which attempts to download all updates at the defined time.

The field also supports Do not update and Incremental updates only.

Do not update never performs an update.

Incremental updates only means that only the daily updates (which are relatively small and shouldn’t be blocked) will be downloaded over the Internet connection. Any new baseline files must be requested from CensorNet, via DVD.

See the description on the URL Database Status in Section 3.
